One Hospitalised After Belfast Fire

A man has been taken to hospital after a fire at a flat in Belfast.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) attended the blaze on Rotterdam Street in the Short Strand area of the city at 11.24am on Thursday 24 January.

Two appliances from Central Fire Station and one from Knock attended the incident.

The fire was believed to be "well-developed" in the first floor flat by the time emergency crews arrives at the scene.

A man in his 60's has made his way outside and was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene before being taken to hospital by ambulance.

A spokesperson for the NIFRS said: "A working smoke alarm alerted the man to the fire.

"This incident serves to highlight the importance of a working smoke alarm as they alert you to the earliest stage of a fire and give you vital extra time to escape.

"NIFRS is reminding everyone to have a working smoke alarm on every floor of their home and to test it once a week to ensure it is working.

"The cause of the fire is confirmed as accidental. The incident was dealt with at 12.10pm."

Ed Sheeran Collaborates With Co Down Guitar Firm

A County Down based guitar firm has announced a collaboration with Ed Sheeran.

Lowden Guitars and the international music star have created a new range of acoustic guitars called Sheeran by Lowden.

The collaboration was announced at the National Association of Music Merchants 2019 show in Anaheim, California, on Thursday 24.

The singer-songwriter said his aim was to make affordable quality guitars to encourage more young people to play music.

"There are fewer guitar bands and fewer artists using guitars now, and not as many kids picking up guitars," he explained.

"That is something I would like to change by getting these great quality guitars, made in Ireland, into kids' hands and encouraging them to learn and progress.

"To be able to work in tandem with a guitar company like Lowden to create a whole different concept has been a really cool experience."

Ed even surprised music merchants and friends of Lowden with a performance.

The new collaboration grew out of a friendship between the artist and the company, which has been in operation since 1961.

Man Released After Sperrins Gold Mines Arrest

Police have released a man who was arrested at the site of a controversial gold mine in County Tyrone.

The man was detained on suspicion of obstructing a highway and resisting police on Wednesday 23 January.

He was later released pending a report being sent to the Public Prosecution Service.

Mining company Dalradian is hoping to open the mine in Camcosy Road, Gortin, but campaigners are opposed to the move due to the use of cyanide in the extraction process and the plan to dispose of large quantities of crushed rock.
