NI unemployment figures show slight rise
Unemployment figures in Northern Ireland have shown a slight rise, according to latest figures.
However, the latest Labour Market Statistics show that the Northern Ireland unemployment rate (6.3%) is lower than London (7.0%) and the North East (6.4%).
Commenting on the statistics released this morning, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment, Ian Pearson, MP, said: "Overall the Northern Ireland economy has performed well during recent times. Employment is at or near record levels – and for the past three months the claimant count has been dropping by an average of 400 a month.
"But the latest Labour Force Survey figures show that there is no room for complacency. Government is committed to providing a platform of stability and growth and to building a strong economy and a fair society. Northern Ireland, along with the rest of the UK, is well placed to benefit from the opportunities that the global recovery will bring."
Today's figures also show that the number of people claiming benefit in January had fallen by 0.2% to 33,500.
