Fire Service Support Centre Opened
The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) has today opened its new Service Support Centre worth £8.2 million at the Boucher Road in Belfast.
The facility will be a hub for maintenance, service and repairs of fire appliances and operational equipment.
Over 50 staff are based at the new bespoke building, bringing together key Fire Service functions including fleet and engineering, operational equipment and communications workshops, supplies, research and development.
It was officially opened by Richard Pengelly, Permanent Secretary for the Department of Health.
Interim Chief Fire & Rescue Officer, Michael Graham said: "The Service Support Centre is a facility we are already extremely proud of. It is not only visually impressive but more importantly its functionality has been meticulously designed to meet the specific needs of our dedicated support teams. I look forward to the real and measurable benefits this Centre will bring us as a Service, as we continue to do things better."
Funded by the Department of Health, building work commenced on site in March 2017 with collaboration between HLM Architects and Lowry Building & Civil Engineering.
NIFRS Chairperson Carmel McKinney added: "This is the largest capital investment for NIFRS in recent years and following many years of planning, hard work and dedication, it's tremendous to see a project of this scale come to fruition. It has been a collective effort from the outset between the various Departments within NIFRS, our sponsoring government Department, the Department of Health, along with the Department of Finance and Health Projects within the Central Procurement Directorate. I'm confident that collectively we have created a Service Support Centre of the highest calibre that will be used for decades to come in supporting the work of Firefighters in protecting our community."
Richard Pengelly, Permanent Secretary said: "I am delighted to be able to officially open the new Service Support Centre for the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service and congratulate all those involved in this significant project. This new purpose built facility will be of great benefit to all the staff and will assist the organisation to deliver the best possible fire and rescue service to the people of Northern Ireland."

ASSEMBLY CREATE AWARD TO HONOUR FIRE SERVICE
THE Northern Ireland Fire Service is to receive the first ever award given by the province's devolved assembly. An illuminated scroll is to be presented to Chief Fire Officer John McClelland on Tuesday, by assembly speaker Lord Alderdice in tribute to the sacrifice made by fire fighters over the years.

NI's Chief Fire Officer Announces His Retirement
The Chief Fire Officer for Northern Ireland, Peter Craig, has announced that he is to retire after over 35 years of distinguished Service. Peter Craig is one of the longest serving officers in Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service and was appointed as Chief Fire Officer in February 2011, having been the acting Chief from July 2010.
