Sinn Fein Condemn Vandalism Of Narrow Water Memorial
A Sinn Fein MLA has condemned the recent vandalism at Narrow Water memorial in Warrenpoint.
Poppy wreaths laid at the County Down site were ripped down and strewn across the ground in the latest attack that was discovered yesterday, Sunday 02 June.
The memorial commemorates 18 soldiers who died in an IRA ambush in 1979 and has been repeatedly targeted by vandals.
Sinn Fein MLA for south Down, Sinéad Ennis, has hit out at those responsible.
"There is no place for attacks like in our society and I condemn this act outright," she commented.
"Monuments and memorials are important places in communities and should be respected.
"I would encourage anyone with information on this incident to contact the PSNI."
Audit Office To Examine Belfast City Council Funding- Alliance
The Northern Ireland Audit Office is to examine whether Councillors in Belfast City Council have followed recommendations for funding, according to the Alliance party.
It comes after Councillor Nuala McAllister accused the DUP and Sinn Fein of ignoring calls to see funds "more fairly allocated" across the city, after money was added to rates for bonfire diversionary schemes and Féile was granted the largest bloc of festival funding.
A delegation of Alliance Party Councillors met with the Audit Office last week. Councillor McAllister later commented: "The Audit Office has consistently signalled that the current format for making decisions on future funding falls far short of what is fair for all.
"That's why today's meeting was so important and we are glad to see the Audit Office not only take our position seriously, but confirming it would be looking into whether recommendations released last year had been followed.
"And they have gone even further, adding the office will be closely following the updates of any future festival strategy – signalling the time of funding carve ups led by the DUP and Sinn Féin is coming to an end.
"Today's acknowledgment has been a long time coming, after those two parties consistently worked together over the last mandate to ensure their own interests where protected. That's why Alliance is keen to secure a fresh approach as the new Council term gets underway.
"In 2019 it is not acceptable that we have a system that favours some and Alliance won't stand back and allow what has happened over the past five years to become the norm over the next four.
"There are so many worthwhile projects and groups across Belfast that are losing out at the hands of the DUP and Sinn Féin’s obsession with protecting a divided society."
Co Down Road Closed For Resurfacing
Resurfacing work has commenced on the B7 Vale Road in Ballynahinch, Co Down.
The £163,000 project will see a 1km stretch improved from the Vale Road junction with the Ballynahinch Road to immediately beyond the Vale Road and Cahard Road junction.
A daily weekday road closure has also been implemented to facilitate the works between 8am and 6pm from Monday 03 June to Friday 05 July.
Diversionary routes will be clearly sign posted and local access for residents will be maintained at all times during the works.
Drivers should expect some delays and are advised to leave additional time when planning any journeys.
The scheme is expected to be complete by 05 July.
