Call For Clarity For BT Staff In L'Derry

An SDLP Councillor has called for "clarity and certainty" for BT staff working in L'Derry after the telecoms giant announced a consolidation plan, with 90% of offices set to close.

Eight offices, including Belfast, have been earmarked as key locations to be saved as the company restructures its operations and closes 270 of its 300 sites.

A further 22 are yet to be announced, however BT has said no jobs will be lost. Uncertain times remain, however, for the 300 staff in Queens Quay office in L'Derry and 200 in Enniskillen.

Ballyarnett Councillor Rory Farell said: "Yesterday's announcement will have come as a shock to the staff and they now need clarity on what the future holds for BT's operation in the city.

"The SDLP has requested an urgent meeting with company executives to establish how the restructuring plan will impact workers in Derry, as well as in Belfast and Enniskillen.

"BT has publicly stated that all affected staff would be offered a relocation package, but the potential loss of an employer of that magnitude would be a massive blow to our local economy.

"BT staff in Derry need clarity and certainty now."
