New IRA Claim Responsibility For PSNI Car Bomb

The New IRA has claimed responsibility for the attempted murder of a PSNI officer with a car bomb last week.

The device was discovered under the senior officer's car which was parked at Shandon Park Golf Club in east Belfast on Saturday 01 June. It was found by a member of the public and the golf club was evacuated.

The dissident republican group, which was responsible for the murder of journalist Lyra McKee in April, issued a statement to the Irish News using a recognised code word.

It read: "The IRA claims responsibility for the recent under car booby trap.

"We are confident the device would have exploded if it was not for the level terrain it had travelled on.

"We were unlucky this time but we only have to be lucky once."

Two burnt-out cars linked to the attempted murder were later found in the Ardoyne area of north Belfast.

Police have appealed for anyone who may have been in the Ballyhackamore or Upper Newtownards Road area between midnight and 2am on Saturday 01 June to come forward.
