Rescue Effort Launched At North Coast Beach
The Portrush RNLI launched a rescue effort at a North Coast beach yesterday after reports of a jet skier in difficulty.
A man is believed to have been left stranded after a fault with his jet ski. Three members of the public attempted to assist him back to shore during the incident on Benone Beach shortly after 8pm on Monday 22 July, but were unable to do so.
Although the sea was smooth, there was a strong offshore breeze that hindered those who had attempted to assist and they later received medical attention from the Coastguard.
Assisted by the Greencastle Coastguard, an RNLI volunteer crew located the individual and towed the jet ski back to the beach after deeming the man to be medically fit.
Following the successful operation, Des Austin Coxswain of the Portrush RNLI stated: 'We had just finished the debrief from our exercise earlier when the call to come in, so we were able to launch very quickly. The jet skier had no wetsuit on and even in a balmy summer evening the water is still very cold, so it was important that we reached him as soon as we could.
"There was also a strong off shore wind which made it difficult for the other swimmers to assist, so the members of the public did exactly the right thing by calling for help. It's also key for us to make sure that the jet ski is recovered also as it could pose a hazard if not taken out of commission."
