SDLP Condemn West Belfast Shooting

An SDLP Councillor for west Belfast has condemned a shooting in the area on Monday evening which left a man in critical condition.

The incident on the Springfield Road saw the 30-year-old victim chased before being shot a number of times. The suspect is believed to have fled the scene on foot along Kashmir Road.

Councillor Brian Heading hit out at those responsible for the "savage attack" which could have left others injured.

He said: "People in this part of West Belfast are in shock this morning. You never become used to the news that one of your neighbours has been shot, it's a numbing experience and it has once again created a chilling atmosphere for local people.

"This was a savage attack in the middle of a built up residential area. Those responsible have left one man critically ill in hospital and could have injured others. Who gives them the right to dole out rough justice? It's certainly not the people of this community. They are criminal thugs and need to face justice.

"I would urge anyone who witnessed the attack or has any information about the attackers to come forward and help the PSNI as soon as possible. There's no room for these people in West Belfast. We need to make sure they're caught as soon as possible."
