Men Attacked By Gang Armed With Baton & Hammer

Three men have been targeted by a gang of five armed with a baton and hammer during an aggravated burglary in east Belfast.

Police are appealing for information following the incident in the Calvin Street area in the early hours of this morning, Wednesday 07 August.

A possible link between the burglary and an assault on a delivery driver on the same street, which took place at around 4.50pm on Tuesday afternoon, is being investigated.

Detective Sergeant O'Flaherty said: "Shortly before 00:45am, it was reported that five men, with one man wearing a balaclava gained entry to a house in the area. Three men aged 47, 49 and 53 years old who were inside the property were assaulted by the men, who were armed with a baton and hammer. The inside of the property was also damaged, as the males involved made off towards the Upper Frank Street area following the incident."

The victims suffered injuries that are not believed to be life threatening, while there are no reports of serious injuries resulting from the earlier assault on a delivery driver.

Police are working to establish a motive and have appealed for anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in the Calvin Street area in the early hours of Wednesday morning, or who witnessed the assault on Tuesday afternoon to contact detectives on 101, quoting reference number 42 7/8/19. Information can also be passed on confidentially by contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
