Alliance Welcome Petition For Easier Benefits Access

The Alliance Party has praised the submission of a petition to Government that demands easier access to benefits for people with terminal illnesses.

A result of a Marie Curie campaign, the petition urges Government to remove the current restrictions which mean terminally ill people can only get fast access to benefits if they are told they have six months or less to live.

Signed by over 50,000 people, it was handed over to Boris Johnson at 10 Downing Street on Wednesday.

Paula Bradshaw MLA said the move would mean everyone suffering with a terminal illness would get easier access to the benefits they're entitled to.

"It is vital the Government not only listens to the need for the change to be made but it makes it a priority to do so as soon as possible. The people most in need of help literally have no time to waste," the south Belfast representative commented.

Also welcoming the move, fellow Alliance MLA Kellie Armstrong said: "Someone who has a terminal illness has enough considerations on their plate without having to worry about fighting for access to benefits.

"My colleagues and I have submitted a motion to be debated when the Assembly returns, calling for the six-month life expectancy criteria be removed and legislation changed to adopt a fairer definition of terminal illness. Hopefully this petition helps change this as well."

SoS Attends Co Antrim Football SuperCup

Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Julian Smith has attended the SuperCup tournament in Ballymena to enjoy a match between County Antrim and NC Elite.

The MP for Skipton and Ripon, appointed to his role last month as part of Boris Johnson's newly-formed Cabinet, was invited back to the borough after attending the match.

Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Maureen Morrow said Mr Smith's visit was widely welcomed. She commented: "It was great to welcome the new Secretary of State for Northern Ireland as he visited our borough on the first week of his new appointment.

"This visit was an opportunity for us to engage with Mr Smith on a number of important economic issues. We have invited him back at the first available opportunity to meet with Mid and East Antrim council members so that these issues can be discussed in more detail."

L'Derry Road To Close For Resurfacing

Road works are set to take place on the B521 Glengalliagh Road in Londonderry starting next week.

This £150,000 scheme will see a 500m section of the road from Bradley's Pass progressing south westwards improved.

Work is expected to run from 12-24 August.

A full road closure will be implemented between 8am and 6pm throughout to facilitate the works.

A diversion will be clearly signed via A515 Skeoge Road and Bradley's Pass. Access to the Northside Shopping Centre for patrons and deliveries will be maintained.

Road users should expect some delays and additional time should be allowed when planning any journeys.
