West Belfast Security Alert Disrupts Travel

Significant travel disruption has been caused in west Belfast as police dealt with a security alert.

The busy Springfield Road was closed between Workman Avenue and Pollard Street early this morning, Wednesday 21 August, while officers responded to a suspicious object in the area.

It has since been informed that the alert has ended, with the device declared an "elaborate hoax".

The route remained sealed off for several hours and motorists were advised to seek alternative routes.

A Sinn Fein councillor for the area said the operation caused significant disruption and inconvenience for the local community.

Cllr Claire Canavan urged drivers and residents to avoid the area between the West Circular roundabout and Lanark Way.
