Waste Firm Fined £5k For Water Pollution
A waste management company has been fined £5,000 for a pollution incident in County Antrim.
ISL Waste Management pled guilty to allowing an unconsented discharge to enter a waterway at Belfast Magistrates' Court on Tuesday 03 September.
It comes after an inspection of the River Blackwater on 06 April 2016 which uncovered a dark discolouration and an oily film on the surface. The inspector proceeded to Central Park, Mallusk and arrived at the rear of ISL's premises to discover skips were being power washed.
The dark coloured, oily discharge which contained flecks of orange was flowing along the roadside before entering a surface water gully.
Signs of water pollution were evident when a sample of the discharge was collected and analysed. The impact of the discharge on the waterway was visible for a distance of two kilometres.
The company was ordered to pay the fine plus a £15 Offenders Levy for allowing the discharge to enter the waterway.
