Mental Health Awareness In The Workplace
Mental health issues feature heavily in the press. In the UK increasing numbers in the last number of years have prompted changes to legislation and led to the introduction of the Mental Health Charter for Employers in Northern Ireland.
Many of us will have had first-hand experience of this personally, through a friend, family member or work colleague.
The Charter was produced by the Equality Commissioners in conjunction with Active Mental Health, Disability Action, Mindwise, Mental Health Foundation and Niamh, local charities who provide support both practical support and information in this area.
While we may have a vague recollection of the Charter many workplaces have not yet taken steps to introduce an environment promoting wellbeing within the workplace. Small changes such as offering Mental Health First Aid Training to staff, workshops and promoting fitness and exercise could make a huge difference.
As we know, a person's mental health can have a significant impact on their performance whilst perhaps struggling to work while ill or being absent due to illness.
Statistics published by mentalhealth.org.uk report that
• 1 in 6.8 people experience mental health problems in the workplace (14.7%).
• Evidence suggests that 12.7% of all sickness absence days in the UK can be attributed to mental health conditions.
• Better mental health support in the workplace could save UK businesses up to £8 billion per year.
The Charter is a voluntary commitment from Employers to develop best practice in the workplace. By making minor changes and being aware of the issues you could be better supporting your staff and protecting your business from losses due to absenteeism.
