Charlotte Murray: Search Underway In Co Tyrone
A police search for the remains of murdered Omagh woman Charlotte Murray is underway in Co Tyrone.
While divers previously scoured the quarry area in Benburg, an extensive search is set to be carried out in the coming days and weeks in the hope of finding Charlotte.
Ms Murray was murdered sometime between 31 October and 01 November 2012 however her body has never been found.
The renewed search comes three weeks after a jury unanimously found the then 34 year-old's ex-fiancé Johnny Miller guilty of her murder. He is due to be sentenced next month.
A digger today began preparing the flooded quarry to enable drainage and facilitate an extensive search of the ground.
Detective Chief Inspector Eamonn Corrigan who is leading the investigation said: "This has been an area of significant interest throughout my investigation and today's searches are following a detailed review of all of the information available to me from my investigation and the subsequent trial."
Charlotte's family have been hoping to have her body returned to allow a proper burial for the seven years since her death.
"They deserve to be able to say their goodbyes," Inspector Corrigan continued. "Charlotte's family and friends have suffered greatly from the time when she was last in contact with them, seven years ago. I want to recover her body and allow her loved ones to finally put her to rest.
"We have previously conducted searches in this area with specialist divers however I want to drain the water so that an extensive search can be carried out of the quarry floor. I am as determined as ever to bring Charlotte's remains home to her family and I need to satisfy myself that every avenue has been explored."
Police renewed their appeal for information on the whereabouts of Charlotte's remains, urging anyone with relevant details to contact detectives on 101 or in confidence via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
"Seven years have now passed and it is important that we bring Charlotte's family the closure that any grieving family deserves," Inspector Corrigan concluded.
