General Election Set For December

Voters appear set to take to the polls in December for the third time this year as the House of Commons moves towards a general election.

Labour has today said it will support the Prime Minister's call for an election, with MPs set to vote on Tuesday evening, 29 October.

The decision comes after EU leaders agreed to a flexible Brexit extension until January 31, and Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn felt satisfied the risk of 'no-deal' had been taken off the table.

Boris Johnson hopes to hold the poll on Thursday 12 December, with the SNP and Liberal Democrats vying for the election to be held just three days earlier, December 09.

Currently in Westminster, Northern Ireland is represented by 18 out of the 650 seats. Ten of those belong to the Democratic Unionists, Sinn Fein has seven but its MPs maintain their policy of abstentionism, and independent unionist MP Lady Herman holds the seat for North Down.

The DUP has upheld the Conservative party through the confidence and supply agreement since June 2017 when Theresa May's government lost its majority in a snap general election.

It's unclear as yet whether the party's 10 MPs will support the move for a general election.
