Shankill Jobs & Benefits Office closes following attack
The Shankill Jobs & Benefits office in west Belfast has temporarily closed its doors, following an attack on staff last Friday.
Two staff were injured in the incident which police are currently investigating.
A spokesperson for the Social Security Agency said the decision was regrettable but that the safety of both customers and staff was paramount.
"This type of dangerous behaviour must be condemned in the strongest terms," the spokesperson said. "We have closed the office to the public until this matter is resolved. The Shankill office has a history of maintaining services to the public during difficult times and we are determined to continue to serve the people in the Shankill area despite this incident."
Despite the closure customers will still receive their monetary entitlements, whether as a girocheque, order book or direct into their bank or building society account. Special arrangements have also been made for people who sign on for JobSeeker’s Allowance; they do not have to sign on for benefit.
Anyone experiencing difficulties can telephone the office on 028 9025 1456 or contact their nearest Social Security or Jobs & Benefits office.
No decision has yet been made on when the Shankill office will be reopened.
