Essex Trailer Deaths: NI Man Arrested

A 23 year-old man from Northern Ireland has been arrested in connection with enquiries into the deaths of 39 people in a lorry trailer in Essex last month.

The man was detained by Thames Valley Police on behalf of Essex Police in the early hours of this morning, Friday 22 November.

He was apprehended on the M40 in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire on suspicion of conspiracy to traffic people and conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration.

Bodies of the Vietnamese nationals were discovered in the back of a refrigerated trailer on Wednesday 23 October.

The suspect remains in custody.

Maurice Robinson, a 25 year-old also from Northern Ireland, has been charged with 39 counts of manslaughter, conspiracy to traffic people, conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration and money laundering.

He is due to appear at the Old Bailey on Monday 25 November.

Two other men from Northern Ireland, brothers Ronan Hughes (40) and Christopher Hughes (34), from Co Armagh are still being sought by police. They are urged to hand themselves in for questioning.
