Businesses warned to beware of mailshot scam

The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment’s Trading Standards Service, has advised local businesses about the latest attempt to get them to part with their money via mailshots.

The latest mailshot comes from the 'Health and Safety Enforcement Agency', based in Summerseat House, Liverpool.

A spokesperson for TSS said: "It certainly sounds official – but it’s not. The so-called agency is a private company sending out mailshots entitled 'Final Notice'. The mailshot asks businesses to send £125 to receive a 'compliance pack' in order to comply with accident recording and health and safety law.

"As yet, it is unclear what is included in this ‘compliance pack’. However, businesses can purchase the materials required to comply with health and safety law directly from The Stationery Office, 16 Arthur Street, Belfast and it will cost them much less than the £125 quoted in this mailshot."

The spokesperson pointed out that a copy of an approved poster entitled 'Health and Safety Law in Northern Ireland' is available for £7.50.

Guidance and advice on health and safety issues is also available, free of charge, from the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI); contact their Helpline on 0800 0320 121 or visit their website at www.hseni.gov.uk.

Anyone receiving one of these 'Health and Safety Enforcement Agency' mailshots and who requires further advice should contact Consumerline on 0845 600 6262.
