Murder Probe As Man Dies In Carrickfergus

Police have launched a murder investigation after a man's body was discovered in Carrickfergus, Co Antrim.

The victim was found in a flat in Ashleigh Park on Saturday 04 January.

Three people, two men aged 38 and 39 and a woman aged 47, were arrested on suspicion of murder on Monday 06 January. All three have since been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

The death has created speculation in the area of involvement by the south east Antrim UDA. Police have refused to confirm this and said such rumours may harm the investigation.

Detective Superintendent Jason Murphy said: "I am aware that speculation is circulating that this death is in some way related to the activities of South East Antrim UDA. The investigation remains at a very early stage and it is not yet possible to be definitive about the motivation for this man's murder but the potential for it to be linked to those associated with paramilitary organisations will form part of our investigation.

"Rumour and speculation within the community is likely to be unhelpful as we seek to establish the circumstances surrounding this man's death.

"In the coming days we will be working closely with local Neighbourhood officers to provide reassurance to the local community and to enable those who wish to speak to police to do so."

Those with information about the murder or who they believe may have been involved in it are urged to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
