Conference highlights nursing care practice

A major conference to highlight innovation and best practice in the nursing care of Older People was held in Co Antrim today.

Hosted by the Nursing and Midwifery Group at the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety, the Templepatrick conference was attended by 250 nurses and professionals from across Northern Ireland.

Speaking at the conference, the Chief Nursing Officer for Northern Ireland, Judith Hill said: “High quality care for older people is central to the success of changing older people’s experience of care. Local nurses are at the forefront of delivering innovative practices in this area and it is crucial that their contribution is celebrated and experience shared.

“One of the aims of the conference is the ‘sharing’ and ‘transferring’ of innovative practices, whilst also addressing the future contribution of nurses to the care of older people. Today’s event allows participants to consider the challenges and opportunities across the professional and care sectors."

The Conference opened with a creative dance and celebratory performance by two dancers, Mary Anna Hanse, a Holistic Therapist in her sixties and Jenny Elliott a student dance teacher.

It also conference featured a range of speakers and the key-note speech was delivered by Prof. Brendan McCormack, Professor of Nursing Research & Director of Nursing Research and Practice Development, University of Ulster & Royal Hospitals Trust, Belfast.

Minister announces free nursing care for elderly residents

Care Standards For Nursing Homes Revised
Care standards for nursing homes in Northern Ireland have been revised by the Health Minister. The standards set out the minimum requirements that providers of these services must achieve. They also set the level of service that the residents in nursing home care and their families and carers can expect.
