Positive jobs outlook for Northern Ireland

Employer hiring confidence in Northern Ireland continues to be positive, the latest jobs outlook survey has revealed.

According to Manpower, the UK's leading workforce management company, the number of businesses expecting to take on staff in the near future is up 20% for the second quarter of 2004 compared to the same period last year. This is a slight quarter-on-quarter increase of 3% and compares with a national average of 16%.

The West Midlands is the most optimistic with a Net Employment Outlook of 32%.

Commenting on the figures, Greg Teare, Divisional Director for Manpower in Northern Ireland, said: "There's a sustained feeling of employer optimism in Northern Ireland and we've seen an increase in permanent placements, which is a good indicator of business confidence in the area.

"Work opportunities in the financial services sector are particularly strong at the moment and we are seeing growth in the call centre area, with both permanent and temporary positions available."

The Manpower Employment Outlook Survey provides a forecast of employer hiring intentions for the quarter ahead from April to June 2004.

Approximately 2,500 UK employers were surveyed in the UK and over 35,000 employers in 18 countries globally.
