DARD announces equine sector research consultants

The Department of Agriculture (DARD) has announced the appointment of consultants, BDO Stoy Hayward, to carry out research into the equine sector in Northern Ireland.

The aim of the research project is to underpin the Equine Group’s development of a long-term strategy for the equine industry. The research will have three components:
  • to map the equine industry and identify its component parts
  • to complete baseline data, although it is not intended to carry out a full census
  • to identify the key issues to be considered in the preparation of the strategy for the industry.
The research was commissioned by an Equine Sub Group of the Rural Stakeholder Forum, the consultative body established to advise the Minister about strategic issues in the agri-food sector and rural economy.

The Equine Group comprises of 21 representatives of over 30 equine organisations who participated in a consultation period throughout 2003.
