HSENI: Four Deaths Caused By Falls From Height In One Month
Four people died as a result of falling from a height in Northern Ireland last month, the Health and Safety Executive has announced.
One of the largest causes of death, disability and injury in the construction industry, HSENI highlighted fall prevention best-practice and guidelines in light of the recent fatalities.
"These tragic cases underscore the dangers of falling inside a building under construction and the critical importance of providing internal fall protection when working at heights," a spokesperson said.
Internal fall protection measures are required for a range of construction jobs, including installing joists or roof trusses, installing concrete floor slabs or stairs, working near or over fragile surfaces or working adjacent to voids in the roof and floor.
Full details of current health and safety guidelines are available online.
UUP Call For PSNI Funding To Tackle Paramilitarism
The Ulster Unionist Party has brought a motion to the Northern Ireland Assembly that calls on the Justice Minister to ensure the PSNI has enough resources to tackle paramilitary activities.
The proposed motion recognises that many areas are still controlled by fans and urges the Minister to allocate further funds to boost police efforts against paramilitarism.
Andy Allen, Ulster Unionist MLA for East Belfast stated: "It's over twenty years since the Belfast Agreement was signed and there is absolutely no excuse for paramilitary groups to continue to exert coercive control over communities. For far too long people and often entire communities have lived in a state of fear, being threatened and murdered by paramilitary gangs. The political leadership of this country needs to send a clear message that it has to end and demonstrate the political will to back the police with the resources they need to tackle all paramilitary groups, no matter what part of the community they come from."
