Community-pharmacy project gets £400,000 boost
An innovative community pharmacy programme that has delivered health services in partnership with local community groups has gained a £400,000 boost today.
The Building the Community-Pharmacy Partnership (BCPP) which has been running for three years and was due to finish at the end of this month is set to continue.
Health Minister Angela Smith announced today that the success of the project has resulted in £400,000 being made available to make the programme permanent.
The Minister said: "This programme is an innovative community development initiative. It focuses on local communities working together with local community pharmacists to develop services and schemes tailored to meet local needs and priorities, particularly in areas of social need.
“This unique and innovative programme has put Northern Ireland in the lead in the delivery of community pharmacy. The additional funding will now ensure that the success and impact that the programme has delivered at a local level can continue.”
To date the programme has made available £500,000 to 45 different projects through a variety of venues including darts and snooker clubs, local schools, hostels and luncheon clubs.
The Building the Community-Pharmacy Partnership is one of the key developments highlighted within the new Community Pharmacy Strategy, 'Making it Better – A Strategy for Pharmacy in the Community'.

The BCPP programme is led by Community Development and Health Network (CDHN) in Northern Ireland and is funded by the Department of Health.
