Nicola Brogan To Take West Tyrone Assembly Seat

Sinn Fein has selected Nicola Brogan for co-option to the Northern Ireland Assembly.

The Omagh woman will replace former West Tyrone MLA Catherine Kelly following her resignation over a failure to return money wrongly paid through a Stormont emergency Covid fund.

Ms Kelly was the fourth party official to resign after it emerged that three Sinn Fein offices automatically received payments of £10,000 via the Small Business Grant Support Scheme.

The money lay unreported for months before being repaid, despite MP and MLA constituency offices being ineligible for the payments.

Former Foyle MP Elisha McCallion and two other Sinn Fein officials, including Ms Kelly's husband Barry McColgan, also stepped away from their roles over the matter.

Speaking after she was chosen for co-option, Ms Brogan said: "I look forward to serving the people of West Tyrone and working alongside my party colleagues from the area and across Ireland to make their voices heard.

"Many challenges lie ahead but we are in a decade of opportunity which will shape the future of this island. There is a part for everyone to play in that and I look forward to playing my part in standing up for workers and families and creating a new Ireland for all."

West Tyrone MP Órfhlaith Begley said Ms Brogan will be a great addition to the team.

"I have no doubt she will be a dedicated and tireless representative who will work hard for the people of the area," Ms Begley said.

"I look forward to working alongside Nicola and wish her well in her new role."
