Encirc To Invest Over £870,000 In Employees Skills

Derrylin-based food and drinks industry supply chain business Encirc has announced an investment of more than £870,000 to develop the skills of its employees.

The Fermanagh firm specialises in glass container design, manufacturing, bottling and logistics solutions for the food and drink sector. It distributes its products across Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Great Britain and Europe.

Announcing the investment plans, Economy Minister Diane Dodds, said: "My Department is currently developing a new Skills Strategy for Northern Ireland, due to be published next year. This recognises the need for a renewed focus on skills across all levels and sectors in Northern Ireland, to equip businesses to grow and excel in export markets. Encirc's investment at its Derrylin facility will focus on training its employees to use new technologies and machinery to drive its competitiveness and innovation on a global scale."

The company's 'Engage' programme will bring expertise on-site by training staff in project management and lean manufacturing processes, along with staff wellbeing support and a new apprenticeship programme.

Work Begins On Bridge Replacement Scheme In Omagh

Work has begun on a £260,000 bridge replacement scheme at Dreenan Road in Omagh.

Bracky Bridge was one of five bridges to be damaged beyond repair, as a result of the flooding event of August 2017. The new bridge will be a single span reinforced concrete structure with masonry parapets.

Welcoming the commencement of the works on the bridge Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon said: "It is great to see work commence on the bridge following the devastating consequences of the 2017 floods. I recognise it has been a difficult time for the local community while the bridge has been closed, however, I am sure they will join me in looking forward to seeing the bridge back in full use."

Alliance Question Status Of Active Travel Strategy

The Infrastructure Minister has been asked to confirm if her plans to promote active travelling, including meeting the Bicycle Strategy objective, are on target.

Raising the issue in the Assembly Alliance MLA Chris Lyttle pushed the Minister to consider an Active Travel Act, ensuring relative funding was diverted towards the scheme.

He added: "Active Travel is still facing significant underinvestment and while I commend the work the Minister has undertaken to date, we must do more.

"If an Active Travel Act was brought forward there would be a statutory responsibility to fund a way of life that will have a huge impact on our current society.

"From spending more time outdoors to tackling climate change, we all have a reason to appreciate and want to see Active Travel enhanced. The great outdoors has been an important component of life throughout 2020, with many relying on walking and cycling while other restrictions have been put in place.

"Active Travel is not a phase – it has the potential to revolutionise society and providing us with the tools to sustain, promote and enhance our environment going forward."
