Black Taxis Should Be Supported Like Translink - SF
Belfast Black Taxis should benefit from the same financial support being offered to Translink, Sinn Féin have said
The party has called for an urgent meeting between the Belfast Black Taxi Association and Minister for Infrastructure Nicola Mallon on support for the public transport service.
Making the call, West Belfast MP Paul Maskey said: "The Belfast Black Taxi Association must be provided with immediate support by Infrastructure Minister Nicola Mallon to ensure this vital public transport service is maintained and jobs protected.
"It is firmly our view that the Belfast Black Taxis should benefit from the same system as Translink – with the provision of subsidised travel for senior citizens and young people.
"Implementing concessionary fares for Black Taxis would be a small cost for the Infrastructure Minister.
"However, these subsidised fares would be to the benefit of the local community, as well as making Belfast Black Taxi's much more financially sustainable and competitive.
"We are not asking for anything extraordinary, but merely for Black Taxis to be treated equally to other public transport services.
"The Belfast Black Taxis have ferried the people of Belfast for decades - I will do all that I can as the MP for West Belfast to ensure that this service remains in place for decades to come.
"Minister Mallon - it is time for words to turn to action.
"It is time to sit down, meet and support our black taxi drivers."

DOE’s Driver Vehicle Testing Agency (DVTA) has called on people to only use legal taxis this Christmas. This year to date DVTA has checked 2,024 taxis resulting in the detection of 583 offences with 230 vehicles unlicensed, and 200 uninsured.

New Taxi Regulations Outlined
From January next year, taxi customers will be able to hail all cabs, black or otherwise, in the street, rather than having to secure a booking beforehand. The news comes as Environment Minister Mark H Durkan outlines the timescales for new legislation affecting taxis to be brought in.

Bus Lanes Could Be Opened To Taxis
The Northern Ireland public will be able to hail private hire taxis on the street when new licensing laws come in. The Department of the Environment has also launched a consultation on whether all taxis should be allowed to use bus lanes, which only some have access to at present.
