BT secure multi-million pound Broadband contract

Northern Ireland is set to become the first region in Europe with 100% broadband access.

This follows today's announcement that BT has been awarded a multi-million pound contract to deliver the services by the end of 2005.

Announcing the decision at Datum Tool Design Ltd in Ballynahinch, Enterprise Minister Ian Pearson said: “By the end of 2005 every household and every business in Northern Ireland, no matter how remote, will have access to broadband at the same price. Local businesses will have the level playing field they need to compete in a global economy.

“My announcement today also builds on government initiatives that are bringing Broadband to every school and library and the delivery of key government services electronically. I am very pleased to be able to say that Northern Ireland is now the leading Broadband region in Europe.”

Commenting on the announcement, Bill Murphy, Chief Executive BT Northern Ireland and Managing Director, BT Regions, said: "To date, in partnership with DETI, UK on Line, local councils and Invest Northern Ireland, there has been a groundswell for Broadband availability which has exceeded any other region of the UK or Europe.

"It is a tremendous tribute to be a key part of this momentum to enable all businesses and households in Northern Ireland and bring the very real benefits of connectivity. This will ensure that Northern Ireland is a seriously attractive area for existing company expansion and new inward investment."

The tender for the 100% Broadband contract attracted 27 responses from across Europe.

The contract will mean that people and businesses in Northern Ireland, in addition to the services from BT, can choose to buy services from any of the other 150 Broadband service providers.

The purpose of the competition was to provide a range of Broadband services for 100% of households and businesses, delivered at equitable cost across Northern Ireland and is based on best value for use of public monies.
