Crowds Gather For Annual Twelfth Parades

A more localised version of the Twelfth has seen over 100 parades take place across Northern Ireland.

The Orange Order parades were limited to 500 people due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This follows on from last year's cancelled celebrations, when people were encouraged to mark the event in their homes and gardens.

Ahead of yesterday's marches, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland said: "The Twelfth of July is a significant day for many people in Northern Ireland, as they celebrate their cultural traditions. For those attending Orange Order parades today I wish them a safe and enjoyable day."

Grand Master of the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland, Most Wor. Bro. Edward Stevenson has since called the event a "great success" and is looking forward to traditional celebrations in the future.

"I would encourage all members of the Orange Institution and wider Orange Family to remember that this is still Northern Ireland's CentenNIal year and there is much work to be done celebrating that special occasion over the coming months and beyond," he added.

"I trust everyone has enjoyed their 'Twelfth near home' and I now look forward to many more events as we seek to continue marking the Centenary of Northern Ireland in a style befitting such a momentous milestone."
