Newly Qualified Teachers Not Registered To Work In NI Schools
As schools prepare to welcome back pupils, it has been reported that up to 500 newly qualified teachers are not yet registered with the General Teaching Council NI (GTCNI).
All teachers must register with the GTCNI before they are allowed to work in a school in NI.
According to BBC News NI, the GTCNI have not yet completed the registration of up to 500 newly qualified teachers, which means they are not legally allowed to work in a school.
Responding to the reports, SDLP Education Spokesperson Daniel McCrossan has said that it has only further enforced his view that the body is beyond repair.
The West Tyrone MLA said: "When the GCTNI appeared before the Education Committee in May it became clear it was riddled with dysfunction and I expressed the view then that this body is beyond repair. We have heard time and time again how it has disintegrated into a shambles.
"At that point, there were issues around child safeguarding. Today's announcement confirms my view that they cannot perform their duties to the standard required. Key aspects of their job involve processing registrations and keeping children safe. They are not doing either efficiently or effectively.
"What's worse is successive Education Ministers have been aware of the problems within the GTCNI and have failed to act decisively. Education Minister Michelle McIlveen has called on them to resolve the matter quickly. She needs to ensure they get it sorted herself so that hundreds of teachers are not prevented from working next year. Minister McIlveen needs to take some responsibility instead of relying on a body that has shown itself entirely unfit for purpose."

Education Minister Welcomes Progress On Teacher's Pay
Education Minister, Paul Givan, has welcomed further progress on a pay settlement for teachers following the Department of Finance's approval of the pay award. All five recognised teachers' unions (INTO, NAHT, NASUWT, NEU, UTU) have signalled their acceptance of the teachers' pay offer for 2021-22, 2022-23, and 2023-24.

NASUWT Rejects Pay Offer
NI's largest teachers' union has rejected a pay offer for teachers and principals. The offer to the NASUWT was made by the management side of the Teachers Negotiating Committee (TNC). The offer continues the year-on-year cuts to teachers' pay. The NASUWT is calling for an across the board above inflation cost of living award.

Call Made For Cross Border Education
A call has been made for cross-border education by Northern Ireland's Education Minister. Speaking today at the Irish National Teachers Organisation's annual conference in Killarney, John O'Dowd said that parents should have the right to be able to send their children across the border to be educated in the Irish Republic.
