Work begins on £3m Ballynure road scheme

Work has commenced on a new £3 million stretch of road in Co Antrim.

The A8 Improvement Scheme will provide a new link road, acceleration lanes and speed reduction measures at Ballynure.

It is hoped that the one year scheme will deliver significant benefits, not only to the residents of Ballynure by removing through traffic from the village, but also in improving the strategic road link to the Port of Larne.

NIO Minister said: "The A8 is a strategic road link between Belfast and the Port of Larne. Currently up to half of Northern Ireland’s containerised cargo and around one third of all tourist traffic moves through the Port of Larne. It is vital to the economy of Northern Ireland that Larne is serviced by modern and efficient road links."

The scheme involves construction of a new link road, from the A57 junction with the Belfast to Larne road to the Carrickfergus Road. The link road will be approximately 0.9km in length and will remove through traffic travelling between the Templepatrick Road and the Carrickfergus Road from Ballynure village.

A new roundabout will replace the Templepatrick Road junction and the A57 westbound leaving the junction will be widened to provide an acceleration lane. Speed reduction measures will be introduced through Ballynure to improve safety and conditions for local residents.

The improvement work is due to be completed in spring 2005.
