'Viable Pipe Bomb' Discovered In Dungiven Security Alert

The PSNI in County L'Derry have reported that a device discovered on Sunday 12 September was a "viable pipe bomb".

A number of homes in Ard Na Smoll, Dungiven, were evacuated when the device was discovered at about 10:45 yesterday.

The device was examined by Army bomb disposal experts, who declared it as a viable pipe bomb, before it was removed for further examination.

Social Democratic and Labour Party MLA Cara Hunter said that the security alert "caused chaos for local residents forced from their homes".

The East Derry MLA said: "Residents in the Ard na Smoll area of Dungiven have been forced from their homes this morning following the discovery of a suspicious object. This kind of chaos is the last thing families need on a Sunday morning .

"I would urge everyone to follow the advice of PSNI officers at the scene until they make the area safe and residents can return to their homes."
