DUP Calls On Dublin To 'Use Its Influence' On EU Negotiators

The DUP has called on Dublin to use its influence to press EU negotiators to stretch and prioritise the interests of Northern Ireland over the interests of EU capitals.

Party Leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson made the call following a telephone conversation with Taoiseach Micheál Martin.

Speaking after the call, Sir Jeffrey said: "We had a useful discussion. Dublin is a key influencer in Brussels. They must use that influence to reach a sensible outcome which is sustainable and can command the support of unionists in Northern Ireland.

"Brussels' devotion and loyalty to the Protocol should not overshadow the wider interests of peace and stability here. They must demonstrate preparedness to stretch. They must recognise the Protocol has failed.

"The EU's focus should be on negotiations rather than briefings and ill-advised remarks which do nothing to advance the delicate situation in Northern Ireland.

"As Lord Frost outlined today, it has been a long road to get Brussels back to the table, but there is little sign of progress. We need to see progress or else the Government must step in to safeguard the United Kingdom internal market. The Irish Sea border cannot continue.

"The Protocol is failing businesses and citizens in Northern Ireland every day. Our opposition to the Protocol remains resolute. Not a single elected unionist supports the arrangement therefore those arguing that the Protocol is fundamental to stability are blinding themselves to the concerns of unionists."
