Swail knocks out Doherty to win through to second round

The first shock of this year's World Embassy Snooker Championship has seen former champion Ken Doherty knocked out by Northern Ireland's Joe Swail.

Dublin born Doherty, who reached last year's semi-final and won the title back in 1997, was beaten 10-5 despite playing a solid, if less than exciting, game.

Swail's consistent potting was enough to secure a second round match and leave him believing he can go all the way in this year's competition

While day one of the game was a tight affair, the Belfast man went into an overnight lead of 5-4 thanks to two century breaks. However, despite losing the opening frame on day two, he secured the next three frames with breaks of 66, 85 and 67.

There was only going to be one winner after that and so it proved with Doherty failing to win another frame.
