Merck investment to create 80 new jobs

The world's third largest pharmaceutical company has announced it is to invest €5 million and create 80 jobs at a new Irish operation in Co Dublin.

Merck & Co., Inc launched its new subsidiary, 'Merck Sharp & Dohme Ireland (Human Health) Limited', to conduct clinical research, regulatory affairs and marketing support for Merck in Europe and to manage sales and marketing for the Irish market.

Commenting on the announcement, Enterprise Minister, Mary Harney said: "This is an ideal example of the kind of knowledge-based investment IDA is seeking to attract here as it adds high value activities to an existing Irish operation and further enhances the value of that operation to the parent company.

"I am delighted that Merck & Co., Inc., with which we have a long established relationship through its manufacturing plant in Ballydine, Co. Tipperary, is broadening its investment here beyond that of a manufacturer of active pharmaceutical ingredients."

Recruitment is already underway, with opportunities in product management, sales, clinical research, medical support and regulatory affairs. A number of the new positions have already been filled.

Søren Tulstrup from Merck said "Our new Irish subsidiary will play a pivotal role in relation to our global clinical research, regulatory and promotional activities. With a strong portfolio of marketed products that has made MSD one of the fastest growing companies in the industry and an exciting pipeline of new products I am convinced it will become one of the leading companies in the industry.

"In addition, through our UK subsidiary we have been providing our market leading products to Irish patients for over 25 years and are currently number five in the market. With this new dedicated Irish subsidiary we believe we will be even better positioned to service that market."

Merck & Co., Inc. currently operates a state of the art manufacturing facility in Ballydine, Co Tipperary which was opened in 1976 and currently employs 450 people. To date the facility has received over €750 million investment from the parent company.
