Minister launches Magherafelt development plan

Environment Minister, Angela Smith today published the Draft Area Plan that will guide development in the Magherafelt District for the next 10 years.

Mrs Smith said the Plan would facilitate sustainable patterns of growth and provide a sound basis for future development of Magherafelt District.

"It is a further indication of the progress being made by my Department, towards providing up-to-date Area Plan coverage for all of Northern Ireland," she said.

"In line with the Regional Development Strategy, the Plan promotes Magherafelt as a main town within Northern Ireland and supports the growth and regeneration of towns and villages within the District. This can sustain a living and working countryside and protect environmentally sensitive areas from inappropriate development.

"I encourage the people of Magherafelt District to consider the policies and proposals contained in the Plan and to visit one of the Public Exhibitions, which have been organised over the next few weeks."

The Plan identifies 125 hectares of land for housing in the towns and villages and 50 hectares of land for industry.

A number of major transportation proposals are identified in the plan as well as the importance of the District’s landscapes such as the Sperrins Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
