Waterways Ireland To Develop New Sustainable Waterway Network
Infrastructure Minister John O'Dowd has welcomed Waterways Ireland's ambitious plans to develop a sustainable waterway network which will contribute significantly to the recreation, social, economic and environmental life across the island.
Minister O'Dowd visited Waterways Ireland Headquarters in Enniskillen and met with the CEO, Mr John McDonagh. The Minister was briefed on a range of key projects including the Ulster Canal Restoration Project, the Carnroe Weir Rehabilitation Project and the Waterways Ireland's Climate Action Plan, which has just been published.
Following the visit, Minister O'Dowd said: "I was delighted to have this opportunity to visit Waterways Ireland today and to hearabout the Ulster Canal Restoration Project. The restoration of the Ulster Canal, from Lough Erne to Clones will provide an amenity for local communities as well as being a superb visitor attraction. It will also provide opportunities for increased economic activity in a mainly rural area where the level of economic activity is currently low.
"I am very impressed with Waterways Ireland's plans for the rehabilitation of Carnroe Weir. The Weir is listed on the Industrial Heritage Register and Waterways Ireland has brought forward a solution that will address the deterioration while remaining sympathetic to the original structure.
"I'd also like to commend Waterways Ireland for the development and publication of their Climate Action Plan. The climate crisis affects everyone and we must each play our part in tackling climate change. It is great to see Waterways Ireland bring forward a plan that makes climate action integral to the organisation's operations and development."
