Road Works Contracts Worth £20m Awarded

Contracts worth almost £20 million have been awarded for a range of road resurfacing schemes across NI, Infrastructure Minister John O'Dowd has announced.

Phase One of the Department's interim asphalt resurfacing procurement strategy, which consists of resurfacing contracts for Magherafelt, Omagh, Dungannon, Strabane, Down as well as Newry and Mourne have been awarded.

Infrastructure Minister John O'Dowd said: "This is welcome news and an important first step in improving road conditions in these six areas. I am pleased to announce this procurement exercise has been successful and that these contracts have now been awarded.

"This asphalt resurfacing work will make a significant difference to road safety and journey times, improving the lives of the people who live in these areas.

"The awarding of these contracts is an important development and I am delighted that we are one step closer to this important and much-needed work getting underway."

Work in these six areas is due to start towards the end of July.

Man Charged In Connection With Donegall Road Burglary
A 36-year-old man is due to appear before Belfast Magistrates' Court charged in connection with a burglary. At about 1.35am on Monday 02 February, the occupants of a house in the Donegall Road area woke to find an unknown male in their bedroom. The man fled the scene and it was discovered that a tablet and a mobile phone had been taken.

Teen Killed On Co Down Road Named
A teenager killed in a road collision in Co Down on Sunday has been named as Deaglan Moran. The 14 year-old died following a crash on the Flying Horse Road in Downpatrick. He had been travelling as a pedestrian at the time. Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Anyone who was in the area at around 6.

Traffic: Serious Collision Closes Co Armagh Road
Motorists in Co Armagh are facing traffic chaos this morning as police deal with a "serious" two-vehicle collision. The Monaghan Road has been closed in both directions at its junction with the Baltarran Road at Milford.
