Off-duty soldier dies in parachute jump

An off-duty soldier taking part in a parachute jump in Co Londonderry at the weekend has died.

Sergeant David Halls, 43, was killed on Saturday as he took part in the civilian jump at the Wild Geese Parachute Centre, near Garvagh.

Police do not believe there were any suspicious circumstances behind the incident, however the British Parachute Association, as is normal in such incidents, is to hold a full investigation into the fatality.

Sergeant Halls, who hailed from Bangor, was based at Shackleton Barracks in Ballykelly.

An Army spokesman described the news as a "terrible tragedy".

"Obviously our thoughts go out to everyone who knew him," they added.
