NI sports receives £1.4m boost

Sports facilities across Northern Ireland today received a massive boost of more than £1.4 million lottery cash from the New Opportunities Fund.

Schools and communities in Belfast, Enniskillen, Tyrone, Down, Londonderry and Antrim will receive state-of-the-art sports facilities such as floodlit sports pitches, changing rooms, fitness suites and outdoor play areas.

Eleven projects are benefiting from today’s announcement by the largest of the lottery distributors. The grants totalling £1,483,612 will mean that hundreds of youngsters and the wider community will benefit from new and improved sports facilities.

Breidge Gadd, the New Opportunities Fund’s Board Member in Northern Ireland said: “Our New Opportunities for PE and Sport programme is already having an impact on schools and communities across Northern Ireland and this latest boost will bring new and improved facilities to many more.

“National Lottery players can take pride in the fact that they are helping to bring about such a positive change, widening availability and access to high quality sporting facilities in schools and communities across Northern Ireland.”

The grants have been awarded under the Fund’s PE and Sport programme. This £33.75 million programme aims to revamp existing facilities, build new outdoor sports facilities for pupils and encourage young people to stay involved in physical education.
