Report reveals contrasting smoking and drinking numbers
The number of people smoking in Northern Ireland has fallen dramatically over the last 15 years, however drinking figures have increased significantly during the same period.
This is according to a new report by the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety which examines trends in the prevalence of smoking and drinking behaviour by age, gender and socio-economic status.
The report, which analysed data over the period 1986-2002, examined trends in behaviour for different people, of similar ages, at different points in time (birth cohorts).
In 1986, 35% of men and 32% of women, over age 16, smoked however by 2002 these proportions had fallen to 27% and 26%, respectively. The decline in smoking has been significantly less marked amongst women, compared to men, and by 2002 a similar proportion of both women and men were current smokers.
The proportion of men and women who currently drink has increased from 73% of men and 59% of women in 1986, to 81% and 73% respectively in 2002. Men were more likely than women to drink alcohol in each year between 1986-2002, although the gap has narrowed over that time.
Drinking is more common amongst successive age groups at the same age and is significantly more marked amongst women than men. This may have implications for the future health of women.
The research was commissioned by DHSSPS and undertaken by two academics at the London School of Economics and King’s College London.

Appeal For Information On Aggravated Burglary In Cookstown
The PSNI have issued an appeal for information following a report of an aggravated burglary at the Queens Avenue area of Cookstown on Friday 3rd February. Shortly after 10pm, it was reported that four masked men entered a property in the area with one of the men armed with an iron bar and another man armed with a suspected firearm.

Peggy O'Hara Funeral: Three Released
Three people have been released by police investigating a number of offences at the wake and funeral of Peggy O'Hara. Two men, aged 44 and 57, and a woman, 43, were released unconditionally, after a number of masked women and women attended the funeral. Peggy O'Hara was the mother of an INLA member who died in a hunger strike in Long Kesh in 1981.

Two Women Working In Café In Belfast Win Equal Pay Claim
Two women working at a café in Belfast have won an equal pay claim. Paulina Paczkowska and Agnieszka Anna Golygowska both worked as floor staff- cum-baristas in the Avoca Café. While they had been doing the same work as a male colleague since May 2013, the male colleague had always received a significantly higher rate of pay.

Police Launch Investigation Following Arson Attack
Police have launched an investigation following an arson attack on a house in west Belfast on Wednesday. Two women, aged 61 and 23, and three children were in the property at the time, however they were not injured. Accelerant was poured through the letterbox and set on fire at around 10.30pm.

Two Men Attacked With Baseball Bats In Co Antrim
Two 18-year-old men have been attacked with baseball bats in Whitehead, Co Antrim. The victims were closing premises in the Balmoral Avenue area at around 8.30pm on Tuesday, 04 October when three men assaulted them. Both men were treated in hospital for their injuries. One has been discharged, and the other remains in hospital.
