Literacy campaign a success, says Minister
A campaign aimed at persuading Northern Ireland people with literacy and numeracy problems to brush up on their skills has garnered praise from the government.
The 'Learning Works' adverts, which featured a range of situations where people’s personal literacy and numeracy ‘gremlins’ made life difficult for them in doing what they want, has attracted more than 14,500 people since its inception just over a year ago.
Employment and Learning Minister, Barry Gardiner said: "It’s great to see the number of people who responded to the television advertising campaign by contacting our Learning Works helpline.
"The term 'Essential Skills' attracts many adults in our society who have genuine problems in reading, writing and doing maths that have a severe impact on their quality of life."
The findings of an International Adult Literacy Survey conducted in 1996 confirmed that 24% of those aged between 16 and 65 in Northern Ireland performed at the lowest level of literacy.
Launched in April 2003, the campaign aims to attract 25,000 people by 2005.

The PSNI have condemned the assault of four police officers when they were attacked by young people in West Belfast. At around 6:50pm on Saturday, 06 April, police received a report in relation to community concerns that a large group of young people had congregated in Falls Park and that alcohol was being consumed by children.
