Polls Open Across NI For Local Council Elections
Polls have opened across Northern Ireland to decide who will sit on local councils across the region.
Voting began at 7am this morning, Thursday 18 May, and will close at 10pm tonight.
Approximately 807 candidates are contesting 462 seats across NI – a full list of which can be found on the Electoral Office website.
As standard in NI, today's vote will use a Single Transferable Vote (STV) system, which allows voters to rank as many candidates as they wish in numerical order.
According to reports, this is only the second time in 26 years that a stand-alone council election has been held in NI, as they are usually run in conjunction with elections for Stormont, Westminster or Europe.
