Beware of bogus contractors warn Roads Service

Householders are being warned to beware of bogus contractors who are claiming to be Roads Service employees.

The warning was issued today by the Roads Service following a number of instances where residents have been notified of impending roadworks, adjacent to their property, and offering to tarmac their driveway.

In a statement issued today, a spokesperson for DRD Roads Service said it had not authorised such work to commence.

“Householders are told that because of recent changes to the legislation the resurfacing work will encroach some way onto their drive," the statement said. "The bogus Roads Service employee will then offer to resurface all of the drive, at very attractive rates, and encourage householders to pay up front for this service. Needless to say that is the last the householder will see of these people and their money."

Roads Service said it wanted to make it clear that there had been no changes to legislation, which involves partial resurfacing of drives.

Anyone claiming to be from Roads Service and offering the above or similar services should be treated as suspect and if someone calls claiming to be from the Roads Service, photographic ID should be requested.

If a caller claims to be a contractor, carrying out work for Roads Service, he may not have a card; however, worried householders can call the local section office for confirmation that he is there legitimately.
