Political Situation Impacting Fair Start Delivery – Alliance
Northern Ireland's current budgetary situation is having a detrimental impact on the delivery of the Fair Start Report, Alliance Education spokesperson Connie Egan MLA has said.
The Fair Start Report was a New Decade New Approach commitment to look into and address links between educational underachievement and socio-economic background. After being endorsed by the Executive in May 2021, today the fourth progress report was published.
The North Down MLA said: "I am pleased to see progress has been made on recommendations across 8 key delivery areas in the last two years. However, the report makes it clear that the current budgetary situation will have a detrimental impact on implementing the recommendations set out in the Fair Start report.
"The expert panel recommended a budget of £21m in the second year of the implementation plan for 2023/4, instead the Department of Education has allocated a fraction of that, at £2.5 million. This is extremely concerning and will directly impact vulnerable young people, already at risk of educational underachievement.
"The report highlights improvements to services such as Early Years and emotional health and well-being won't be implemented, as recommended, due to the enormity of funding cuts being made by the Department of Education.
"Once again our vulnerable children and young people are the ones paying the price for a lack of political leadership."

Man Jailed For 20 Years For 2022 Murder Of Alyson Nelson
A 68-year-old man has been sentenced to a minimum of 20 years in prison for the murder of Alyson Nelson in Whitehead in 2022. William (Bill) Finlay was handed a life sentence last November, after pleading guilty to murder aggravated by domestic abuse.

Man To Serve 20 Years In Jail For 2020 Murder Of Inayat Shah
A man has been sentenced to a minimum of 20 years in jail for the murder of Inayat Shah on 21 March, 2020. Mr Shah (67), who was the owner of a guesthouse in Ballymena, was stabbed multiple times in a "horrific and savage" attack near his property on 21 March 2020.

Unions have announced that the latest strike action has been cancelled to allow ministers to time to prepare improved pay offers.

The Department for Communities (DfC) has reminded landlords that registered in January, February and March 2021 to renew their registration if they're still a landlord. In February 2014, the Landlord Registration Scheme was introduced and each period of registration lasts for three years.
