Bomb defused outside SF member's home
What has been described as a "viable device" has been defused outside the home of a Sinn Féin member's house in Ballymena.
Michael Agnew said that he had discovered the device under a van outside his home in Dunfane Avenue at 6am. He said it appeared to be an eight-inch pipe bomb with a timing device.
Mr Agnew said that when he realised that the device was not attached to the vehicle he drove the van away from the bomb. He blamed loyalists for the attempted attack and said that there had been a recent escalation in attacks on Sinn Féin members and republicans in the Ballymena area.
The device was defused by security forces who carried out a controlled explosion. It was later confirmed the device was a pipe bomb.
A second device in the Ballymena area was later found at a house in the Carniny area of the town. A number of houses were evacuated in Sunningdale Park while army technical officers examined the device. It was later declared a hoax.
