NI schools to get broadband link up

Every school in Northern Ireland is to be linked up to Broadband, providing more than 350,000 pupils and teachers with access to e-mail, messaging and conferencing facilities.

Launching the new C2K/Hewlett Packard Data Centre, which links up individual schools networks, Education Minister, Barry Gardiner said the initiative represented a "significant investment by the Government in the future development of Northern Ireland, almost £204 million to date".

"Our vision is to provide pupils with the skills to place Northern Ireland firmly at the forefront of today’s ‘Knowledge Economy’," the Minister said.

"C2K is the most ambitious project of its kind in the UK, and one of the most comprehensive in the world. It is a tremendous opportunity for schools and pupils to work together and to share ideas, and will greatly enrich the learning process."

Schools have been supplied with individual computer networks, almost 40,000 workstations, providing access to over 200 educational software titles designed to directly support the Northern Ireland Curriculum.

C2K (Classroom 2000) is being delivered through a series of Public/ Private Partnership (PPP) contracts and is a major part of the "Empowering Schools in Northern Ireland" strategy.

The project aims to deliver a ‘managed service’, a new approach to providing Information and communication Technology for schools.
