Belfast venue for top martial arts Wushu event

The eyes of the martial arts world will be firmly fixed on Belfast next week when the Wushu Duan Wei examinations are held outside China for the first time in 80 years.

‘Wushu’ is the Chinese word for martial arts and encompasses a variety of disciplines and styles, including kung fu.

Some 80 martial artists from all over the world – including Great Britain and Ireland, Africa, Italy, France and China – will be coming for Belfast for the examinations which are being held at Stranmillis University College for three days from Thursday June 17.

“It is a tremendous honour for Belfast to have been chosen as the first ever venue outside China to host these examinations,” commented Councillor Pat Convery, Chairman of Belfast City Council’s Client Services Committee.

“It is a fitting tribute to the work and dedication of Master Zhu Chang Hai, President of the Northern Ireland Wushu Association, and a mark of the extremely high regard in which he is held in the world of martial arts, that he has been able to bring this event to his adopted City.

“Belfast City Council is extremely excited about this historic event, and looks forward to seeing the development of Belfast as a centre of excellence for all aspects of martial arts in the years to come."

Three of China’s most eminent martial arts teachers, led by the Vice-President of the Chinese Wushu Association, will be flying in to share their knowledge and oversee the examinations.
