Man Jailed For 2021 Murder Of Nigel Orr-McAuley
A 38-year-old man has been been sentenced to a minimum of 11 and a half years in prison for the murder of Nigel Orr-McAuley.
Mr Orr-McAuley, who was aged 53, was found dead in his home in Bangor in July 2021. He was found in his bedroom in a house that he shared with the defendant and others.
Daniel Szcezyelak was sentenced today, 20 October, at Downpatrick Crown Court, having previously pleaded guilty to murder.
Welcoming the sentencing, Detective Inspector Michelle Griffin said: "Nigel Orr-McAuley was found inside the locked bedroom of his Bangor home in the early hours of Wednesday 14 July 2021. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene. He had sustained multiple stab wounds to his head, arms and body."
She continued: "The two men had been socialising together prior to this fatal attack. It's believed that Szcezyelak demanded money and, when his demand was not immediately met, stabbed his victim multiple times.
"This was an unprovoked attack, and one which has taken an innocent man's life, leaving a loving family bereft.
"I'm keen to thank Nigel's neighbours and companions who, having witnessed some of the disturbing ordeal, were quick to assist the investigation. Thanks to such support, and with the backing of strong forensic evidence, Szcezyelak entered a guilty plea before evidence was opened to the court. Importantly, the family and witnesses did not have to re-experience the fine detail of this cruel attack.
"Today, Szcezyelak has been held accountable for his violent actions, which sadly can never be undone. My thoughts, and that of the team, remain firmly with Nigel's family and friends, whose worlds have been torn apart."

Attack On Police Bears 'Hallmarks Of Dissident Activity'
Police officers have said the attack on two of its officers on Tuesday evening bear the hallmarks of dissident activity. It is suspected a device was thrown at a police vehicle after officers were responding to a routine burglary call at 10:30am in Victoria Parade. The device exploded in mid-air and damaged a parked car, smashing its windscreen.

'Double-Jobbing' Salaries Top £4.7m
Salaries and expenses ranging from just under a quarter of a million pounds up to £360,000 are being paid to 16 local politicians. All are 'double-jobbing' representatives, being MLAs and MPs and almost half are paid over £9,000 in allowances as councillors as well. In all the taxpayer has funded the top 16 politicians to the tune of more than £4.

Just days after a Sinn Fein call to 'rethink' what had been described as a rates 'rebate' over Ministry of Defence (MoD) properties in the Limavady area, a Derry City Councillor has claimed the body has been 'ordered' to repay £76,000 to the MoD, after the defence agency successfully appealed its rates bill.

NI First Minister Peter Robinson has backed the Belfast News Letter's campaign to stage a homecoming parade through the streets.
