RNLI to be honoured at freedom ceremony
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is to be awarded the Freedom of Coleraine Borough for the crucial role it has played in saving hundreds of lives along the North Coast.
In a ceremony at Coleraine Town Hall on Saturday, the Council will pay tribute to the charitable organisation whose Lifeboat Station at Portrush has been responsible for saving some 325 lives since it was established in 1860.
Over the years, lifeboat crews in Portrush have established a record of more than 1,000 rescue missions, many of them undertaken when crews have been exposed to huge personal risk.
Commenting on the ceremony, Cllr Dessie Stewart, Mayor of Coleraine, said: “Since the RNLI was established in 1824, it has relied solely on the generosity of the public through subscriptions, donations and bequests. No public money is either sought or received and it is a reflection of the high esteem in which the organisation is held that the public continues wholeheartedly to offer its financial support to the organisation.
“This week we will demonstrate another level of our appreciation when we, as a Borough, pay formal tribute to the RNLI, its members and crews and thank them for saving lives and vessels, often in situations of great personal danger."
The granting of the Freedom of the Borough is the highest honour that a civic authority can bestow on an individual or an organisation.
In a period of more than 70 years since this Borough’s second incorporation, only 15 awards have been granted.
